Top 8 Ways to Get Rid of a Hangover Fast!
Ok, so you overindulged last night, it happens! And now you have a pounding headache, you’re irritable, and you feel sick to your stomach – aka you have a massive hangover. What to do?! All is not lost, there are certainly ways to feel better fast! Never again waste another day due to a hangover.
Below lists the top 8 ways to get rid of your hangover:
1. Drink a smoothie
The next morning, make a large smoothie with plenty of fruit. Fruit is high in electrolytes as well as natural sugar, which your body needs after a night of heavy drinking. Alcohol drops your blood sugar which is why you can feel shaky and irritable the next day.
2. Eat foods rich in potassium
Alcohol depletes your body of many electrolytes, especially potassium. Potassium plays a key role in both body fluid balance as well as muscle contraction. Low potassium levels cause sore crampy muscles, and can also raise your blood pressure.
High potassium foods:
Potassium rich foods include bananas, sweet potatoes, beets, and avocados.
Alcohol is super dehydrating, which is the main reason why you’ll get a headache and feel lethargic and nauseated the following day. Water is of course good, but using an electrolyte infused salty beverage is much better. This will make you feel better than drinking water because the salt and electrolytes will help to keep water in your system. If you just drink straight water, much of it will just be flushed out.
Alcohol messes with REM sleep, which is deep sleep that is essential to feeling rested. So even if alcohol makes you fall asleep and stay asleep, your brain will still feel the effects. Try to sleep in as much as you can because your brain needs it.
This is the single best thing you can do to feel better fast. Movement fires different hormones and neurotransmitters that will make you feel more alert, suppress stress hormones, boost mood, decrease pain receptors – it literally does everything you want to counteract a hangover!
The type of movement doesn’t have to be much, it could just be a stroll through your neighborhood, but the sooner you get out moving the better. It will also distract you from thinking about how awful you feel.
6. Eat eggs
Eggs are one of the very best foods you can eat in general – and they are especially effective with ridding a hangover. Eggs contain large amounts of cysteine which is an amino acid that breaks down acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism. Eating some eggs the next day may help to speed up your recovery process.
7. Sip ginger tea
Ginger is a natural remedy to relieve nausea, indigestion, and all-around soothes an upset stomach. Ginger tea is a good choice because it also gets extra fluids into your system.
8. No fast-food
I know that a very popular thing to do when you’re hungover is to get greasy fast-food, but it will absolutely make you feel worse! Maybe in the moment you are eating the fast-food it makes you feel good – well fast-forward 3 minutes later and that is probably no longer the case. Whenever you put inflammatory, highly processed unhealthy food into your system, your body is not happy and will let you know by making you feel lethargic, depressed, sick, etc. Plus, if you normally watch what you eat, digging into a very unhealthy meal after a night you already just over-indulged, is guaranteed to give you anxiety and make you feel worse. Just say no.
I recommend doing all of the above for best results when it comes to getting rid of a hangover!
